The Malaysian Student’s Technology Conference (MSTC), organised under
Malaysian Students Society of Manchester (MSSM) and in
partnership with TalentCorp Malaysia,
is an annual event connecting the brightest students and graduates with leading
executives, academics and entrepreneurs from the technology field.
As the largest event of its kind, the Conference provides an unmatched opportunity to
discuss current developments in the technology industry with a line-up of accomplished
speakers and a chance to network with future co-workers and employers. The event covers
a breadth of recent topics and features panel discussions, keynote addresses, workshops
and networking opportunities. This event is ideal for undergraduates and postgraduates
from a wide range of disciplines and universities interested in pursuing a career in the
technology field.

Dr. Nehemiah Lee
Topic: Wall of Integrity
Ir. Dr. Nehemiah Lee Chee Hai invented the Nehemiah Walls, the well-known, soil-retaining wall made of hexagonal panels that line our highways. You may see his concrete walls everywhere when traveling down the highways or passing beside flyovers, such as KL-Karak Highway and Second East-West Highway. They had a distinctive feature of interlocking hexagonal panels and a technology to make a wall to last for 120 years! Getting the idea while working with Reinforced Earth in the 80s, Dr. Lee studied the concept and researched diligently to modify the system in tandem with working on his Masters’ degree.
When he first ventured into business, Dr.Lee didn't even know how to read a financial statement. In addition, due to the company's novelty, it became a subject of mockery. "Nehemiah wall? Never heard of it. It will sure collapse one lah" was the usual comment he received. He also faced challenges to hire employees. Instead of interviewing employees, they interviewed him back for company's history in the market and growth because they were concerned that the company wasn't stable. His reluctance to conform to bribery made him lost many projects as he is strongly firm on his moral compass.
However, today, Dr. Nehemiah sits as the Founder of Nehemiah Soils Sdn. Bhd., which, in addition to Nehemiah Reinforced Walls, also works on other related construction projects such as slope stabilization using a geotextile reinforced soil system called GreenMur and the promotion of Segmented Wall, a geogrid reinforced wall with decorative finish, ideal for landscaping. The company has become the recipient of numerous awards such as the Brand Laureate, Red Bull, Ernst & Young and Star Outstanding Business Award from its inception in 1993.
Dr. Lee believes in the value of honesty and incorruptibility in business and has never resorted to bribery to get ahead in the business world with his company. In recognition of his practice of integrity in business, the Institution of Civil Engineers, United Kingdom conferred the International Award to him in 2013.

Mahaletchumy Arujanan

Dr. Mahaletchumy Arujanan was listed as one of the world’s 100 most influential people in biotechnology by Scientific American Worldview 2015. She is currently the Executive Director of the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC) and she aims to transform Malaysia into a biotechnology powerhouse. In addition, she is also the Editor-in-Chief of the first popular science newspaper in Malaysia called The Petri Dish, which allows the public domain to have a better understanding of life sciences.
An expert in biotechnology, Dr. Maha has published many scientific articles and serves on a number of committees including the National Bioethics Council. She is well known for her non-traditional approaches in communicating biotechnology such as through fashion show and carnivals.
Robest Yong
Topic: Think Without The Box

Living up to his motto “Think Without The Box”, Robest Yong does not believe in taking the beaten path. In 1989, Yong left his employment and ventured into the world of innovators. His effort soon paid off as he invented the POLYCLONE instant rubber stamp machine, which became widely successful in commercial, used in bookshops worldwide, and revolutionised the industry. It won him an award (first of many more) at the International Invention Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland in 1994; and he was thereafter named the Malaysian National Inventor of the Year.
Yong was one of the speakers in TEDxKL2013, where he presented his invention to enable visually challenged people to use the smart phone. He also produced multiple inventions such as magnetic brush, luggage detector, mosquito glue, TGFree Laptop charger and probiotic plant nutrients.
Yong is currently the founder and principal of Innopreneur Academy, which is an innovation entrepreneurship coaching platform for innovators. He is also the consultant for Yayasan Innovasi Malaysia (YIM) Grassroot Innovation Program.
Dr. Zainab bt. Ngaini
Topic: Application of Sago Waste

Dr. Zainab bt. Ngaini, an Associate Professor of Chemistry in UNIMAS, has for years delved into the research of novel ideas to aid the conservation of our environment. She currently has over 60 published scientific papers concerning topics catalyst-free, green synthesis of carbon nanoparticles as part of a ‘Waste to Wealth Approach’, a novel concept that utilizes waste materials as profit-making substances that are also eco-friendly. Being part of the team EcoSagoTek that won the Ecopreneur Award of 2012 after having developed a business proposal for their revolutionary water treatment system, Dr. Zainab’s research concerns this management of waste materials to lessen the ecological burden they cause, particularly the usage of sago waste material to absorb oil spills.
Dr. Zainab has been actively involved throughout the years with talks and roadshows promoting the sciences. She believes the youth of the country should realise just how exciting the sciences can be, what with the development of new innovations and green chemistry, especially from waste materials. What more, Dr. Zainab is also a firm believer in the value of research and encourages young people to seriously consider researching as a viable career option, especially if they want to pursue aspirations in the green technology sector.
Mr. Gurmit Singh

Mr. Gurmit Singh is a dedicated environmentalist, social activist and engineer. Currently the Chairman of the Centre for Environment, Technology and Development, Malaysia after serving as the Centre’s Executive Director from June 1985 to December 2006, he is also an Adviser to the Environmental Protection Society, Malaysia; a member of the Environmental Quality Council, Malaysia; a Steering Committee Member of the Climate Action Network, Southeast Asia (CANSEA) where he held a number of key positions, for example, as a Steering Committee Member of Sustainable & Peaceful Energy Network Asia.
Originally a holder of an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Malaya, Mr. Gurmit Singh is a member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, but focuses his efforts into environmentalism to such a pinnacle that he has served on the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment’s Environmental Laws Review Committee, its Environment Policy Drafting Committee and similar committees of the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment since July 2005.
Befitting a person with so much experience, Mr. Gurmit Singh has published several important references on the environment, including Malaysian Urban Household Energy Consumption Patterns in 2006; Sustainable Development Indicators Report in 2004, Making Biodiversity Meaningful in 2001 and delivered over 400 papers at local and international seminars and meetings on environment, conservation, energy, engineering, technology, research, climate change and human rights.
For his extensive work, the Malaysian Government awarded Mr. Singh the distinguished Langkawi Award in 1993, while an Honorary M.Sc. was awarded by Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2000. Mr. Singh’s contributions continue till this day, what with the Green Technology Corporation Malaysia awarding him a Green Catalyst Award in 2015, recognising him as an important part of their vision to create a green Malaysia.
Dato' Mazlan Othman
Topic: Science & Technology and The Future of Society
• Malaysia's First Astrophysicist • Former Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs • 2009 President's Medal recipient from the Institute of Physics Datuk Dr. Mazlan Othman is Malaysia’s first astrophysicist. She was the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in physics from University of Otago since the university was founded in 1869. She later returned to Malaysia and contributed in popularizing astronomy such as establishing university courses, laboratories for undergraduate and postgraduate training, the Malaysian Space Science Studies Division and many more. She served as the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna from 1999 to 2002 and from 2007 to 2013. In July 2002, she returned to Malaysia to serve as the founding Director General of Angkasa, the Malaysia National Space Agency, where her work led to the launch of the first Malaysian astronaut, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor. She is currently the Project Director of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
YB Nancy Shukri

YB Puan Hajah Nancy Shukri is a Minister in The Prime Minister’s Department. She was recently moved from being in charge of the Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division to being in charge of The Malaysian Innovation Agency, Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) and The Malaysian Nuclear Agency. She has expressed great interest in her new post saying that she will be looking into innovation and industry players from different sectors in many aspects.
YB Nancy holds a Diploma in Public Administration from UiTM, Bachelor of Law (Honours) from University of Hull, United Kingdom and an Executive Masters in Business Administration from University of UiTM/Ohio(Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Award). She was the Legal Adviser for Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara from 1992 to 2003. She is the Chairman of MyIPO`s Nomination and Remuneration Committee, Member of Audit Committee and Member of Investment Committee. Currently she is a Member of Parliament for Batang Sadong, Sarawak. She is also among others, Assistant Secretary General for Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak, Member of The International Parliamentary Union, Member of the ASEAN Inter Parliamentary Association and Member of The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. She serves as Chairman of Women Parliamentary Caucus and National Archives of Malaysia
Dr. Foo Say Moo

Dr. Foo Say Moo is the Vice-President cum Chairman of Education and Training Committee of the Environmental Management and Research Association of Malaysia (ENSEARCH). This NGO is an association of organisations, professionals, students and people with interest in learning and promoting effective ways to manage the impacts of human activities on the environment. The members of ENSEARCH believe that all are responsible for managing and mitigating the impacts of their corporate, professional and daily living activities on the environment. Thus, the motto of the association is; ‘ENSEARCH for a Better Environment’.
Dr. Foo himself is a veteran of the environmentalism cause. Having worked for more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, he has covered a spectrum of expertise in Research and Development, science and technology in the fields ranging from petrophysics, crude oil and petroleum products, corrosion and pollution, material, environment, facilities engineering and energy conservation to HSE and sustainable development.
This PhD holder in Atmospheric Corrosion and Pollution from the Victoria University of Manchester is also a Technical Advisor for Golden Ecosystem Sdn. Bhd., a company providing environmental research and consultancy services, with a specialization in air pollution and chemical processes and the Deputy Chair of SIRIM Technical Committee on EcoLabelling, amongst many other memberships and associate-hood in environmentally aware organizations.
Dr. Foo Say Moo now looks forward to greater involvement in the amelioration of Malaysia’s green future, advising the younger generation to consider this field as a viable option for employment. Having seen Malaysia’s commitment to environmental conservation over the past few years, Dr. Foo sees this field as one of the most exciting and necessary means for work.
